Am I wrong? I think it is possible to hoist tabs, but I cannot figure out how.
Thank you.

Thanks. I read this already but it was not helpful. I am being dense. I was hoping for something clearer. Can you please step me through this?

From Help - Hoisting:
http://www.kinook.com/UR/Manual/index.htm?hoisting.htm
In the Data Explorer select any Item, then Tree | Hoist, this will make the selected Item the "temporary root" for the tree.
Or, you can select an Item in the Tree and Ctrl-Enter (Open in new Tab).
Both methods seem to allow you to narrow the focus of a large tree structure. With Hoisting this narrowing of focus takes place in the Data Explorer, thru the use of Tabs it's almost as if you've set a marker in the Tree.
The part that I find confusing is the third paragraph from the Help file:
Each tab can be hoisted to a different location...
What is this referring to?

different location = different item in the tree.
Simply means that you can have one item hoisted in one tab, and another item hoisted in another tab ...

focus/select & hoist on topic of choice
create a favorite
in favorite dialog, select open in a new tab
Result: single click on favorite will hoist topic & open in a new tab

ok, my advice would be NOT to select "open in new tab", because then you loose control for the case when you don't want to open it all the time in new tab.
With this setting, it would open in the same tab by default, and in new tab by holding CTRL, so you are in full control all the time ...

Jan and Quant:
I think this is what I am looking for. The help file was so vague in this regard. So this is what Kinook means by hoisting tabs. Makes sense, but it should be explicitly explained how you need to utilize favorites to accomplish this. Thank you for your examples. Let me see how this works for me.

You need first option checked, however.
