If UR won't start, crashes, displays an error, or hangs when installing, starting or running, first try completely uninstalling, downloading (http://www.kinook.com/UltraRecall/download.html), and reinstalling the latest version of Ultra Recall.
Next, hold down the Shift key when starting Ultra Recall (to start without opening any databases). If it starts up OK in this case, open your database(s) and if the problem occurs when opening, send the problem database and other info described in this post (http://www.kinook.com/Forum/showthread.php?threadid=3038).
It could be just a particular item that causes problems. In this case, you can hold down Shift when opening the database to prevent selecting a potentially problem item when opening the database, and right-click the item and choose Delete to delete without loading the item.
Also try running RegEdit and renaming the registry key KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Kinook Software\Ultra Recall.
If that doesn't help, try running Windows in Safe Mode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html). If UR runs ok in safe mode, something that loads during normal Windows startup but doesn't load in safe mode may be be interfering with UR. Try disabling (http://www.howtogeek.com/74523/how-to-disable-startup-programs-in-windows/), uninstalling, or adding an exclusion for UR to startup applications that are interfering with UR.
Some applications that have been reported to interfere with the normal startup or functioning of Ultra Recall:
* AirFoil: A program that hijacks audio from applications to be sent to remote PCs and devices. One user reported that this program prevented UR from starting on Vista Home Basic. Adding UR to the AirFoil exclusion list caused it to start normally.
* BitDefender Anti-Virus: A user reported that an exception for UR needed to be added to its Advanced Thread Defense.
* Comodo Internet Security: Some users have reported that this program prevented UR from starting on Vista Business SP2. Uninstalling and replacing Comodo with a different firewall program resolved the problem.
* Office Rich Edit Control: Some versions of the Microsoft rich edit control are unstable and can cause crashes in UR. See here for solutions:

* McAfee Enterprise: One user reported that this program prevented UR from starting. Updating the McAfee signatures resolved the problem.
