Clearing Quick Search entries

Hi:

I am using URP 3.5.4.7.

I try to remove all entries from the Quick Search combo, but cannot (Options|Search/Reminders|Remove All).

Restaring does not remove the entries. Is there something I am missing?

Thank you.

It appears that Remove All doesn't work if the list was not added to during the current session. Either initiate a new quick search (to add to the list) and then Remove All, or manually clear the list by exiting UR and deleting the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Kinook Software\Ultra Recall\Settings\QuickSearch.

Jon Polish 04-13-2009 11:02 AM

Thanks. Will this be fixed?

Jon

kinook 04-13-2009 11:09 AM

Yes, but not a high priority since there are two workarounds.

Jon Polish 04-13-2009 11:26 AM

OK, thank you.

I did both but the list remains. Is there another location where the list is stored?

No, unless you're running UR from a USB drive (then they would be in Options.ini in the same path as UltraRecall.exe).

I'm not, yet it is still there. I saw the list in the registry and deleted the entire key. I haven't a clue why it remains.

Jon

Me either. Was UR definitely not running when deleting the registry key?

I am 100% certain. But just in case, I rebooted and tried again. The interesting thing is that I see, in the registry, only the newest quick search entries. I do not see the entire list that drops down from the box in UR.

I delete the entire key and fire up UR again. Two observations. First, alll of the entries are still present, even those I just deleted from the registry. Second, unlike before, I can now add to the list. But I cannot delete the list. Does it also exist within the database? This seems unlikely as the same list appears acrosss all my databases.

One more related question, please. While experimenting with this problem I typed "EEEEEEEEEEEE" (no quotes) in the quick search box. It turned up a bizillion hits which is not true. I then ticked "Match whole words" with the same results. Why?

By the way, I just added this stupid entry to my list and can't get rid of it!

The list is stored and loaded only from the aforementioned registry key. Please ZIP and post or send to support@kinook.com:
1) The info from Help | About | Install Info
2) Run RegEdit and export the registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Kinook Software\Ultra Recall"
3) A screen shot showing the list containing items not in the registry

UR does not create a keyword for a word with the same letter repeated 4+ times (i.e., eeee), and because of this, it also discards such words from a quick search, so all items will match if the search only contains words like that.

You don't have to wait for the search to complete (cancel the search, select another item, or type in a different search).

You could still search (unindexed) for such words in item text by doing an advanced search of Item Text matches wildcard *eeee*.

Sorry for the delay, but I had trouble accessing your site.

Registry export.

By the way, the two items listed in the quick search key are NOT PRESENT in the quick search dropdown box. There is something wrong here.

Can you search your registry for a search phrase that is in the list but not under the QuickSearch registry key? Are you possibly running UR in some compatibility mode (shortcut properties -> Compatibility) that could be causing a registry redirect?

I already searched for unique words and phrases within the registry and, just in case, the appdata folder. This was tried following your suggestion to delete the quick search key. Nothing was found.

I did experiment with some compatibility settings to address display alimonies in my other recent thread. The two settings that were alternately checked and unchecked were "Disable desktop composition" and "Disable visual themes." It is possible I tried "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" at one point, but I cannot be certain. However, all settings have been returned to their default. What do you mean by registry redirect? Wouldn't restoring the settings resolve this? If not, how should I proceed?

Maybe try uninstalling (choosing to delete user customizations), re-downloading, and reinstalling UR. Does the problem occur on multiple machines?

I am really reluctant to uninstall my customizations. They were developed over time and work really well for me.

There is another clue to this problem. As you can see in my screenshot, I have four custom layouts on a toolbar. The choices listed under Quick Search are different for each layout. Is that by design? Whether I use the menu or a toolbar to go to a layout does not make a difference, they are different.

Try it without deleting customizations, and/or save/restore them.

That is not by design and I can't reproduce it here. It is truly perplexing.

Please forgive me in advance because I am a little upset over this collosal waste of time. I uninstalled completely (cusomizations, registry, etc.) and made certain that there was no trace of UR left on this machine. Reinstalled and opened a database wwith the fresh install (nothing changed from default). No Quick Search entries were present. I decided to replace my settings incrementally and narrow the possibilities. As soon as the appdata directory was replaced, THE ENTRIES RE-APPEARED. To make a long story short, I opened up every layoutx.dat file and guess what? THEY ARE STORED IN THE LAYOUT FILES!

There are two locations where the quick search entries are stored. Layoutx.dat in the appdata directory and the registry. And they are LAYOUT SPECIFIC unless the entry appears in the registry. I think it then can appear across all layouts.

Can this please be fixed?

Thank you.

Jon

kinook 04-14-2009 11:23 AM

Please ZIP and post or send the .dat files. Thanks.

Done

kinook 04-14-2009 12:16 PM

Interesting. We'll investigate (a third-party component used by UR appears to be implementing this unexpected behavior, not sure why it only happens for you). For now, you can clear the lists by exiting UR and removing all lines starting with

from the .dat files.

Jon Polish 04-14-2009 12:57 PM

OK, that did it. I hope you can get the Remove All function working as it should.

Thanks.

Jon

kinook 04-22-2009 05:35 PM

This is fixed in the latest download (UltraRecall.exe version 3.5.4.8 in Help | About | Install Info).

Jon Polish 04-23-2009 07:04 AM

Confirmed as fixed. THANK YOU!

Well, not so fast. The history from the Quick Search disapppears, but I am getting this AV shortly after I clear the history. Here are the steps to reproduce:

1. Clear the Quick Search history by going to Tools | Options | Search/Reminders | Remove All. Click OK.

2. Using the menu, cliick on View | Other Windows.

This AV occurs immediately. Initially, it was folllowed by another one, but it has not recurred.

Jon

kinook 04-23-2009 07:50 AM

I wasn't able to reproduce that. Does the problem still occur after restarting UR?

Jon Polish 04-23-2009 08:37 AM

Yes. When I reported this AV, I was able to reproduce it 100% of thhe time. I shut down UR and tried again and could reproduce it almost 100% of the time. I did have some success without any AV, but it was only once or twice. I then restarted my computer and can now replicate the AV about 25% of the time. It seems to occur more reliably when I cycle quickly through Remove All | OK, then click on View | Other Windows. If I take some time after clicking Remove All, it does not seem to happen. This could be coincidental and not definitive.

Jon

kinook 04-23-2009 01:33 PM

I wasn't able to reproduce the problem that way, but I was able to with your .dat and registry settings, after switching layouts and then dropping down the menu. This is fixed in the latest download (3.5.4.9).

Jon Polish 04-24-2009 06:48 AM

I saw and installed the update yesterday. It seems to have corrected the problem.

Thank you very much for this fix. Can you please tell me what is different about my setup that would cause this problem? Are there other issues that I should be cautious of?

Jon

kinook 04-24-2009 06:59 AM

I don't know what the difference is that caused it. But your settings allowed to to reproduce the error and handle it.
