HTML export
Hi:
Although I have relied on UR for many years, I never had to export to html until now. The items are hierarchical and contain rich text and several attachments. The output is confusing to me and unexpected. I would expect to see the tree in the left pane and the item's contents in the right. However, I am seeing virtually identical trees (left and right panes). Regardless of what I select, the contents never appears. Nor do the attachment links function for me. I am sure it is me and as I said I have never used this feature. Am I misunderstanding what it supposed to do? Or, am I doing something wrong? Thank you for your guidance. Jon |

I have attached the results of exporting HTML from the Intro.urd sample. I am seeing the tree on the left and content on the right when opening index.html in a browser.

The database I am trying to export (my main database) does not export as expected. I will send a screenshot to the support email address so you can see what I mean. My other, smaller and simpler, databases seem to export correctly. I thought the problem might be related to the multiple tabs I had (locked and hoisted) I have open. I disabled all of them with the same results. I also tried a repair and compress with the same result.
Thank you for your assistance. Jon |
Have you received my email with the screenshot?
Jon |
Yes, but it doesn't help much. I replied to your message:
Would you be able to send the info from https://www.kinook.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=3038 (particularly #4 and #5) |
Since I had similar problems with XML export, which then, with Kyle's kind help, worked brilliantly in the end, you might be interested to try XML export, too (in case after reading that thread), then compare the results and infer possible settings errors from that comparison. (And in the end, the rich text is just tagged plain-text in both exports, so it should all be quite similar.)

OK, it is sent.

Thank you for this. I will take a look, although I need html for online training.

The difference is that your tree has a lot of folder items. Since a folder item has no content, it does display the tree on the right. To prevent this, you can enter a single space into the detail area of the folder item, so that it has some (blank) content.
If you click on a non-folder item on the left, its detail/content will be displayed on the right. |
Thank you for this explanation. This helps considerably. With databases containing many folders, it may be impractical to add a space in the detail area. Could I accomplish what I want by searching for folders then changing the templates to notes or text en masse without having to add a space to each one?
Jon |
It won't help to change the template -- if the item has no content, the result will still be the same.
One thing you could do is, after exporting, in toc.html, replace all occurrences of href="" with so that the items with no content are not clickable links. We'll consider making this change to the export functionality. |
Thank you for investigating.

This is fixed in the latest download.

Thank you so much. Just an observation if I may. In the forum under version information, the most recent release is 6.2.0.4. Shouldn't this be 6.2.0.5?
Jon |
No, the .exe did not change, just the file
Export\HTML\convert.xslt |
Thank you for the explanation. Since this update introduces fixes, I find this confusing and non standard (in my opinion). However, I am grateful for this.

Hi again:
Some anomalies remain in the form of groups of duplicates. I am emailing the html output and the database used to create it. Please take a look. Perhaps I am doing something wrong. Thank you. Jon |
I did find a problem with HTML export that was introduced by the changes in v6.1 to export with OPML instead of OML tag in the XML, which prevented the XML -> HTML conversion from working properly. This has been fixed in the latest download.
But I wasn't able to reproduce the double exporting of the content that your sample showed. Can you provide more steps to reproduce? Thanks. |
Thank you for your response here and to my email. Using the example file, I expanded the entire tree, the selected all items. Went to File | Export | Documents and Item Rich Text to HTML. Select the export directory, ticked Export child items and Open Explorer window after export. Then clicked Finish. The result is what I sent you.
Not sure what you are asking for with export settings. Other than the export dialogue with its ability to save the settings used in that session, is there something else you need? Thank you for you help and interest. Jon |
Don't select all items. Select the root item that you want to export -- checking Export child items (recursive) will include the child items. If you also select them, they will be exported twice.
|
It does not work on my end. For example, selecting EPIC will export one level deep. I see none of the files under the two folders (2021 and 2022).
I am using the latest update. Jon |
By default, the lower levels are collapsed -- click on the icon to expand an item.

An alternative would be to select the desired folders and the contents and uncheck the recursive option. This is tedious when many non contiguous folders are involved, but I can temporarily rearrange them to be contiguous. Thanks again for your attention, fixes and patience. Jon |
You can select multiple items and export them (and their children). Just don't include child items in the selection to avoid duplicates in the export.
