Are Word documents stored within UR compressed?

Yes. All stored documents and rich text information are stored compressed. For an individual document item, the Document Size and Compressed Size attributes will indicate the actual and stored size, respectively (Tools | Options | Attributes configures whether these attributes are displayed).
