Windows Vista file metadata compatibility
 
Kevin et al,

I am contemplating using more attributes and keywording (and less linking to folders) for classification purposes (would still use a lot of linking to projects, tasks, contacts, etc). I really like the idea of having the classification information embedded in the info item itself for better search and so I can move it around without losing the classification data.

As I understand it, Windows Vista will allow one to add metadata to files (I guess it can be done in WinXP but not reliably?). To that extent, I would like to know if you have any plans on allowing one to export attributes and keywords along with files when Windows Vista is available. I am hesitant to go through the effort of putting all that classification info into my info items if I won't be able to export that metadata with files that are exported to Windows Vista files. Thanks.

In Windows 2000/XP, file metadata is called Summary Information or Property Sets (in programming parlance). There is limited GUI support for editing this info on XP (using the Summary tab of the Explorer file properties dialog), but many applications do expose custom property metadata in this manner (Office, digital camera images, audio files, etc.). UR is capable of importing such metadata (and I suspect this works on Vista as well, although we haven't tested it yet).

However, the reverse is not yet supported (writing UR attributes to file metadata properties when exporting documents). We'll consider adding support for this in the future.
