Default to opening item in new tab?

Is it possible to do this? I am using mainly external files, and if I inadvertently click on another item (or, more annoying, create a new item), it will of course open by default in the same tab, which makes me nervous that something won't get saved. Can I make it so that items always open in new tabs, or at least default to that? Thanks.

There isn't a way to open in a new tab when inserting an item or clicking an item in the tree. I'm not sure how that would make it more likely for changes to get saved, but for inserting, you could first open a new tab (Ctrl+T, Insert). Or for other items in the tree, you can right-click and choose Open in New Tab. Same for links in the details pane (or hold down Ctrl when clicking).

It seems that if I have an external item open in the internal browser, with changes made but not saved, and I left click on any item in the tree, it will open in that tab. I think it will prompt to save changes, but I'll have to test it.
