Doc and Rich text together ??

I am using doc files in UR so as I can benefit from MS Word's controls, but now would like to import plain text files as Rich text.

I have tried to import txt files but I can not edit them?

Is it possible to use both in one database?

Also is it possible to have one database that only has Rich text.

And maybe a related question, if I wanted to have one database that has customised menu's and rich text only how is the best way to do it?

Sorry if I am asking the obvious.

You may create a blank Word document thru a template (see http://www.kinook.com/UltraRecall/Ma...ttemplates.htm). Then import your interested text file.

If you store the file in UR, you can edit it in UR. If you link (don't store) the file in UR, it will be read-only in UR's text editor (must be edited externally). However, text files stored in UR will continue be edited/saved in text format and RTF formatting is not allowed. One option would be to copy the contents of the text file (from Notepad or other text editor) into a UR Text item, which you can then apply RTF formatting to.

Sure.

If that's all you put in it, sure.

Menu customizations are not database-specific. They are layout-specific, so you could switch to another layout (View | Layout | Layout x), customize the menus, then use that layout after opening a certain database. To have rich text only, only insert text/RTF items/documents into the DB.

Thanks for your feedback.

So far I copied and paste a RTF file saved from word, it seems to open in UR with the MS Word controls on top just as a doc file does ? but it does have a different icon showing in data explorer, but I cant use the format menu in UR, but if it opens with the MS Word controls maybe I dont need it.

The difference in file sizes for one original file are
doc file = 22 KB
rtf file = 5 KB
And as I want to import many thousand files it makes sense to use RTF as the file format to store in UR.

When I get time I will try importing to two fresh databases the same files in doc and rtf and see what the UR database sizes are.

Again thanks.
