Make sure that .pdf,.xls,.xlsx,.zip etc. are removed from 'Tools | Options | File extensions to view/edit externally'.
If the documents are linked (not stored) in UR, check 'Tools | Options | Documents | Allow internal editing of linked documents'.
Regarding Excel 2007, note the mention of
.zip in the previous post for Office 2007 documents.
