storing? and searching pdfs

Is it possible to either store (in a *.urd file) OR link to, various pdfs and then search within them using the UR search feature. I have a LOT of pdfs on various topics and it would be nice if I could search all of them more or less at once to find specific words, phrases, etc.

I know I can do this with Archivarius, or dtSearch, or various other search dedicated programs, but can one do this with UR.

Yes.
I just dragged and drop a pdf file into my UR and the text is shown in the editor pane. So the text is searchable AND if you want to view the actual pdf just use the ctrl-j default hotkey to open the document.

Of course it doesn't do OCR of text images.

Yes, it does seem to work. THe output is a little sloppy, but you can at least find stuff. Now, I will load in a couple of thousand pdfs and see what happens.

Indeed it works. But all images are missing. The content is not editable. The good thing is rapid search of keywords.

To view/edit the formatted PDF, configure UR to use a PDF viewer to display PDFs.

A question unrelated to UR:
Which one, Archivaris or dtSearch you like better?
Personally, I like dtSearch because it supports Asia languages.

dtSearch. Although it costs something (don't know what, I bought it several years ago), the upgrades are free and the program is easy to use with very good searching capabilities.
It does merge with Adobe Acrobat and will highlight search findings in the pdf itself, but somehow I screwed that up and now it doesn't work that well with Adobe. Doesn't matter because you can get the results you want, with a lot of context around each finding, so that you get what you really want anyway.

I have used Archivarius, which is free, but it doesn't have the power of dtSearch.

can you support your claim?

I've tried dtsearch twice, but never found anything justtfying $170 in price difference.

Hmmm ... just reading at dtsearch website: "Combining Search Types" ... that feature I miss quite a lot in Archivarius

Btw. does dtsearch support sql files, i.e. could it index ur files by any change?

Somebody asked me a question. I gave my answer. It is my opinion. I am not prepared to argue.

I like dtSearch. if I didn't own it I might use Archivarius, but I also like X1.

dtSearch is--from my perspective--useless when it comes to searching UR files. As far as I can recollect, it doesn't even do that good a job on MGT files (Archivarius is better her). I have thousands of pdfs and dtSearch is great for my purposes

sigh ... I'm not looking to argue either ... you made a statement "A doesn't have the power of B" ... I was looking for reasons that support it, nothing more.

By and large, I tend to agree with Don's opinion as to product features from a user perspective.
BTW, I was amongst the version one paid users of X1. Then it was the fastest search product on the market. Alas, it crashed often and never supported Asian languages.

For dtSearch, you can search word(s) in URD.

Nonetheless, designed as a data search product, UR provides additional unrivaled features:
1. Data organization tools—data explorer, templates, forms,...etc.
2. User defined keywords.
3. User notes.
4. Editable webpages.
5. Multi filetype import/export.
6. International language support.

Just my 2 cents.
