Adding Item Attributes Globally
Step-by-step, how does one add an Item Attribute globally, that is, to all of the Info Items currently on the Tree, and (hopefully) to all the future Info Items that will be added to the Tree?
I couldn't find any mention of this in our beloved UR "Help" File, nor in the Forum. |

Perform an advanced search of <attribute> not exists. Select all search results (Ctrl+3, Ctrl+A). Insert the attribute (Item Attributes pane). This will update all existing items and also cause all future items to have the attribute (since it will get added to all the template items).

Sigh!
Thanks, but once again your explanation brings to mind the truism that software programmers should never, EVER try to explain what they already intimately know (how and what to do), namely, their own software product. Or perhaps it's just that I'm slow. Which is kind of embarrassing since I've had the product three years or so.
OK, I have created an "Item Attribute" called "TAG." When I click on "Advanced Search, I see "Relations, Item/Attribute/Not/Comparison/Value." Apparently I leave "Relations" blank, put "TAG" in "Item/Attribute," then do a search, right? After "Control A" of the search results (Control 3 does nothing), then what? You said: "Insert the new attribute ("TAG") in the Item Attributes Plan." I don't see where this can be done. Could you run this by me again, this time STEP-BY-STEP from a very slow customer's perspective. Thanks. |

The advanced search needs to be
Relation => blank Item/Attribute => TAG Not => checked Comparison => exists Ctrl+3 sets focus to the Search Results pane so that Ctrl+A will select all search results. Then to insert an attribute for the selected items, go to the Item Attributes pane (Ctrl+4), press Insert, type TAG (or selected from drop-down) and press Enter. |

Much better...
Thanks. Clear as a bell. It must have been very painful, though.

wouldn't it be enough just to select all template items and add the attribute to them?

quant,
Nice thought, though I don’t know either and I am a little afraid to try! Just wondering: would that affect all existing notes? Or just new notes created with the revised templates? Thank you. Jim |
