one pane outliner

Is there any way that UR could be used as a one pane outliner. I know that it is multiple panes, but it would be nice to be able to see a Parent and its children all in one pane at once. This would help a lot in writing.
I use NoteMap2 for this now but would like to have it all in UR if possible.
This would probably be a major programming problem for UR, but then maybe not; I'm not a programmer.

If 'Tools | Options | Editor | Show combined text for multiple selection' is checked, you can select an item and its children to see all of their combined text in the Details pane, but it is a read-only view.

That is nice to know, but when you are writing, read-only is rather limiting.

Agreed, but as a workaround, you could <CTRL>A & create a composite read/write item. A bit kludgy.

I don't get what you are suggesting. If I select a couple of panes, I can see the contents of both of them but when I do a Ctrl-A I still can't enter any new text.

In quick options set
Show combined items for multiple selection

Select the items of interest.
The details of those items will appear in a single detail page

Select all of the data on this page w <CTRL>A
By doing this you have now combined all the details from all the selected items

Now paste <CTRL>V where ever you want. This will create a new item
Give your new item a name (Combined Data or whatever)
In the detail page of that item you will have the details of all the selected items in one place.

Does that help?

No. All that would do would lead to multiple replications of information. I would have (I think) a window with A in it and a window with B in it and a joined window with AB in it that I could edit. That is not what I want. I want to be able to see what is in A and B while I am working in C and then going back to A to make additions or deletions. This is possible to do in UR, but the writing is easier if I can see it all at once.
I suppose I could do that in Word but it is easier to move stuff around if it is in little separate boxes like it would be in Ecco or Notepad (or even UR).
I like and use UR a lot, but am beginning to see the strengths of a program like ECCO or Notepad when it comes to writing.

Sorry I couldn't help. As I mentioned a few posts ago, it was a workaround.

As an aside, I use UR to write articles from notes & I gather them over time & finally put them together as described & then write different drafts as I refine the article.

This is accomplished in a form I've set up for this purpose but, from what you describe, I don't think it would of much help to you either.

A program I used called ADM had a neat solution to this problem. The user could float any number of windows of notes to pull data from each into a final form. Unfortunately, ADM is no longer being developed altho there is a perfectly good version available if you are interested in looking at it.

Hope you find a working solution for your situation.

Is there a link to the ADM product? It might be worth exploring.

You could see easily all the children if in the related pane you display "item text" and/or "item notes".

But maybe it's not a bad suggestion if we'd be able to click on "+" in the related/child pane which would expand (and indent) its children in the same pane.

Again, I stress this product is not being actively developed any more AFAIK. That does not mean it will not be in the future. I don't know the status of tech support. There used to be a list @ Yahoogroups. It's quirky but an interesting program IMO.

I tried out the ADM download and it does do an interesting outlining feature, as well as multiple document panes open at the same time. ADM seems to be full of bugs and the UI quickly gets visually complex.

I would still concur that it would be nice to have an editable master view (a la Word) of sub documents where I could move around the subs as objects in an outline/master metaphor.
