Starting a program by executing its file
On my system I have some files created by a program. Internally they are XML files but they do not have the extension .XML instead they have the extension .scrivx
In windows the .scrivx extension is associated with the program Scrivener. When I double click this file in windows explorer then it opens the program associated with this extension (Scrivener), the file specifies a particular project to open and that project is opened in Scrivener. What I want to be able to do is to launch a particular Scrivener project from within Ultra Recall. If I create a link to a .scrivx file in Ultra Recall and click on the link the file is opened in the editor pane as an XML file and its contents displayed. If I drag the .scrivx file to the tree and click on this tree item then it is opened in the editor pane as an XML file. If I construct a hypertext like to the Scrivener executable with the .scrivx file as a parameter then Scrivener opens with the last project it had open. How can I get Ultra Recall to treat .scrivx files in the same way as windows explorer? |

To prevent display of the XML content of .scrivx files in UR, add .scrivx to Tools | Options | Documents | File extensions to edit/view externally.
After importing (linking) a .scrivx file into the tree (via copy/paste, drag/drop, File | Import, etc.), double-click on the imported item, or select the item and choose Item | Open Document on the menu, or press Ctrl+J, or click the Click here to open document link (displayed in the detail pane when selecting an item after adding .scrivx as described above) to open externally in Scrivener. Alternatively, you can create a link to the file within a text item -- Format | Insert Hyperlink, enter a name, and browse to the .scrivx file in the second field. Click OK, then click on the link to open that file in Scrivener. |

I don't think I said you can change the colour scheme, just the theme. I have not found a way to change the background colours of the panes.
However having said that you can change the theme. There are sixteen to choose from, they are in Tools|Customize then select Options and there is a drop down list called 'Paint theme' then select a theme and press close. 'Office 2010 Black' is the best of the bunch in my opinion but 'Visual Studio 2010' is also pretty good. Choose the one you think is good. Did this answer your question? |

I have not yet found any way to set window background colours in Windows 7. I could easily set them in Windows XP but since Windows 7 I have not had the ability to set many of the things I had control over in Windows XP.
I suspect Windows 8 would be even more dire and hide even more settings from the user than Windows 7, after all Microsoft knows best. How could Microsoft be so stupid as to have a mobile phone interface as the front end for Windows 8? |

As PJMiller mentioned, you can configure it so that each database is displayed in a tab. Show the Database toolbar (View | Toolbars | Database), set Tools | Options | General | Windows taskbar entries to 'One for all when database toolbar displayed', restart UR, and then each database that is opened will be displayed as a tab in the Database toolbar. Click on a particular database tab to switch to it.

Programs like MyInfo and MyBasel and even to a certain extent WhizFolders allow the setting of the background colour of individual elements of the user interface. For instance in MyBase I had the background colour of the main editing window as a very light beige, the hierarchical tree of items was a very light green and the hierarchical tree of keywords was a very light blue (yes MyBase has a hierarchical tree of keywords but it main flaw was that it fell over if you had more than about 250 to 300 megabytes of notes within it). Most of the note taking solutions I reviewed had major faults to a greater or lesser extent, apart from Ultra Recall which has minor faults, which would not be that difficult to correct. Ultra Recall represents the best note taking solution I have found so far. |
