managing icons

Some icon questions:

- Can I change the default icon used for a particular file type?
- Can I globally change all existing data items to use the new icon?
- Can I delete icons from the master list?
- I already know how to import new icons... no big deal.

An icon manager of some sort would be useful.

Thanks
maynard

maynard,
1. Yes, on Item Attributes pane, click Icon and choose your favorite icon.
2. Not sure how globally is globally desirable in light of diverse templates. Technically yes, just select the interested Info Items and follow # 1 above.
3. I'm not sure there's so-called "Master List." Simply delete all Info Items possessing the undesired Icon. The said icon will be eliminated automatically.

thanks for the reply armsys.

i guess i should have been clearer... i'll try again.

my three questions are really tied together so i'll just elaborate.

what i want to do is different than just changing an individual item's icon from the attribute pane. i want to be able to globally change the "default" icon for a particular item type (ex. html file type, pdf file type etc.) which would then propagate to all existing info items of that type. what i meant by "master list" is the list that pops up when you change an item in the attribute pane. i want to be able to edit that list and reassign a different icon to a particular data type (similar to how windows allows you to reassign icons from the File Types tab in the Folder Options control panel.)

i've read the "delete all info items to clear the icon cache" method in other posts but that is not reasonable solution. i have several huge databases that are highly organized and annotated. the last thing i want do is nuke and rebuild the database just to change an icon

thanks
maynard

Yes. Perform an advanced search for Icon equals <icon to delete>. Select all search results (Ctrl+3, Ctrl+A). Change the Icon attribute to another icon. An icon that is no longer referenced by any items will be removed.

Yes. Import the new icon to be used for a file type. Use SQLite to rename the icon to that file type extension (see http://www.kinook.com/Forum/showthre...?threadid=3308).

Yes. Select items as in #1 and assign the new icon to those items.

To perform all 3 actions in two steps, import the new icon first and rename, then use that icon in step #1.

When and how exactly are the unreferenced icons removed?

I have numerous icons I do not want - and by far most are unreferenced - and none are being removed. I have some I want to keep that I have not used.

Or is the question only about how to delete USED icons? Is there a separate (easy) way to delete unused/unreferenced icons?

Have there been any more development in this area?

When the last reference to an icon is removed (all items with that icon are changed to another icon), the unreferenced icon should get deleted. This is an automatic process within the UR data layer.

This process would remove any and all unused/never-used icons?

When an item's icon attribute is changed, if the previous icon is no longer assigned to any items, it should get deleted.
