Column settings for a template item

Is there any way to specify a set of columns for a template item? I've been trying to do this, but my selection never sticks. As soon as I come back to the template item it's gone back to its default setting - title, flag, date accessed, date created - which I never use.

OK, this is odd. I thought this was a problem just to do with templates, but I find there is the same inability to set columns for any item. I press F9 and specify the columns, click OK, and there they are. Then I move away, and come back, and the default columns are back. Never came across this before. Is there any setting or configuration that could be doing this?

On further investigation, it's only happening in one database.

Tried that without success. Narrowed it down eventually to some particular items that were behaving oddly: it was like the parent item would become the child item of its own child, like a kind of circular hierarchy... Each time I rearranged them and deleted the duplicates it would come back. In the end I just deleted those 2 or 3 items, and the template they came from, and the problem went away. It was odd while it lasted.
