ZIP option - append to existing file

There is an option in the ZIP File action called "Append to existing file (don't use temporary file)"

However there is nothing in the help for this option. Its fairly obvious what it does however some guidance on its use would be helpful. Basically my question is under what circumstances would it be necessary or beneficial to use this option?

This could be beneficial when working with large ZIP files or when free disk space is low.
