... to make UR take the first line in an item's text as the heading in the data explorer frame? Having to write the same thing twice is a bit tiresome.

No. But you could copy/paste after typing it in the tree (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, Tab, Ctrl+V). But is there a particular reason why the text must be duplicated in the details? The title is already shown in the detail pane tab (right above the text).

Hi,

I guess it's a force of habit. I just want to be able to type up a note and have the first line appear in the Data Explorer. Then if I change that line, it will automatically be reflected without having to do an extra operation.

Not a big deal. Just a nice to have.
