Roadmap - Rich text editor enhancements

This item is third on the future feature list.

In the way it's worded in the roadmap it seems to imply that there's a custom RTF control used by UR which would need to be enhanced to offer more functionality to the end user.

If that's the case, I'd like to vote against this feature.

Reasoning
- Mainly because I'd rather have other features (i.e. attributes based on other attributes) than something which can also be done using Word (or any other RTF editor which is supported by UR).
- Partly because I dislike custom development of such a feature instead of integrating a more powerful RTF editor with UR (from third parties).

Agreed - and why struggle with RTF when there seem to exist useful alternatives like DHTML with CSS. Or since URP3 is already making use of XLM, perhaps adding in the XLST capability on top of it.

Of course, I'm not a techie. I don't know the relative difficulty of these things. But personally speaking, I have a need for RIchly Formatted Text (RIFT), but I don't need it tied to RTF.

Regards,
Bal

Correction:
I should have referred to Richly formatted text in my first post of this thread instead of RTF (as the roadmap feature doesn't seem linked to RTF).

Thanks wordmuse!

Anything that can be done to improve the Output-Reporting-Presentation layer would be welcome.

I've got to wonder how many users are lost due to the weakness in this area. I've stuck around because UR does most of what I need (and is developing), but I could dispense with relying on third-party programs for output.

I also wonder if CSS contains part of the answer. It just seems to me that I should be able to "position" the different UR elements (panes, content, attributes) on a "page", and apply styling to those elements.

Maybe it's just me, but Information Management sounds an awful lot like Content Management which leads to Database Publishing.

I'm curious to see what they come up with.

Ashwken: You might want to reply to the Reports thread. I made that one specifically about reporting.

I'll create a separate thread about the rest of your post; intriguing remarks.

Yes, I had considered posting to the Reports thread:

http://www.kinook.com/Forum/showthre...&threadid=3214

but it seemed to have veered off into discussing Charting; wordmuse's comments above allowed the opening to expand on the thoughts presented.

I would be glad to cross-post, if you think it would help.

I look forward to continuning this discussion.

Without PM's it can be hard to stay on topic .

There's now a separate thread about application architecture in general: http://www.kinook.com/Forum/showthre...threadid=3231. That one is probably better suited to cross-posting your post than the Reports thread.

(although the reports thread itself wasn't meant to be limited to charting ).
