OK, figured it out.
For anyone else who is interested, VBP 5.4 is using regular expressions in the Solution Configuration (as explained in the release notes). My problem was that brackets, '(', are secial characters in regular expression world. Therefore, using an escape character , '\', in front of any special characters like brackets fixes the problem.
